    What is Banana (Ambul)?

Probably the most common domestically used fruit in Sri Lanka, Banana(Ambul) or the ‘sour banana’ is a subspecies of the species Musa Acuminata – the common banana of the subcontinent. Not as large as its Cavendish cousin, it only amounts to 15cm in length and 3 cm in diameter at its largest, and around 10cm in length and 2cm in diameter on average. But the taste of the Ambul Banana is quite richer than that of the Cavendish and is due to its unique, light sour flavor. A comb contains roughly 16 bananas and weighs around 1.5 kg. In Sri Lanka, the sour banana is found in abundance throughout the year, but mostly during the period from March to the end of May. Banana plantations are spread throughout the island without any geographical restriction.

Bananas are a rich source of fibers and Potassium, and are believed to regulate the digestive system, strengthen bones, as well as reduce blood pressure.

In Sri Lanka, it has almost become customary to serve sour bananas as a dessert after the main course. Other than eating it raw, it can also be used to add flavor to fruit salads, ice-cream, juices, smoothies, or even confectionaries from cookies to cakes.
