    What is Polos?

Polos is the unripe fruit of the Jack Tree (Artocarpus heterophyllus). One of the most common trees growing in the tropics of Asia and Asia Pacific, the Jack tree is known among Sri Lankans as the Rice-Tree. The name is apt as Jack Fruit is used as an alternative to rice, which is the main source of Carbohydrates in Sri Lankan meals.

The size of the Polos varies from about 10 to 30cm in diameter and 15 to 30 cm in length, depending on the region of growth, climate, and fertility of the soil. The shape of the it could be anything from mango like to a perfect sphere. However, there is no mistaking Polos with its formidable thorny, husky shell. Regardless of the climate, the Jack tree grows virtually anywhere in Sri Lanka, the harshly hot North and East being possible exceptions.

Rich in protein, carbohydrates, and fiber, Polos is considered to have many health benefits. It is also fabled as the food of the giants. Fables aside, Polos is a very healthy source of vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre. We at U & H Lankafood Exports with our highly efficient network of suppliers promise to deliver you the freshest Polos grown in Sri Lanka.

Treated as a delicacy in the island, this is a vegetarian replacement to meat. It can be used in fillings and curries and when cooked with strong roasted spices, one will be surprised by the resemblance it bears to a poultry dish.
