    What is Banana(Ambun)?

A little closely related to its Cavendish cousin in flavor and size Banana(Ambun) or Ambun is also a subspecies of Musa Acuminata. Almost identical in length to the common Cavendish banana, but a bit more fuller in girth, it averages around 17 cm in length and 3 cm in diameter. Unlike the Cavendish however, this is only edible when it is still a light green color, because when it goes yellow, it loses its pleasant taste and texture. A comb contains roughly 12 bananas and weighs around 3 kg. Being a tropical fruit, the Ambun grows throughout the year. The plantations are found mainly in the wet-zones of south-western Sri Lanka, as well as the dry zones towards the north.

As are all bananas, this is rich in vitamins, potassium and fibers, and is low in calories. Usually a banana will satisfy the need of a light meal between main meals, and is healthier than most processed snacks.

Ambun is very popular in Sri Lanka owing to its unique subtly sweet flavor. In addition to being eaten raw, it is used as a flavouring agent in smoothies, ice creams, cakes and cookies.

U & H Lankafood Exports is dedicated to providing you the finest handpicked Ambun Bananas grown in Sri Lanka.
