    What is Banana (Rath Kesel)?

Rath Kesel, Rathambala, Red Banana, Red Dacca or Musa acuminate is a variety of banana that comprises of a reddish-purple skin, with a flesh that is cream to light pink in color. It is also softer and sweeter than the yellow Cavendish varieties, with a slight raspberry-banana flavor. In Sri Lanka, these red bananas are popularly grown in Kandy.

Bananas are the most widely consumed fruit in Sri Lanka and the Red Banana is supposedly the most expensive and the most delicious. While tasty, these purplish bananas are also nutritious, providing you with vitamins and minerals as well as fiber. An average Red Banana weighing 99g has 90 calories and no fat. It has 23g of carbohydrate -8 percent of your recommended daily value. Of these 23g, 16g are sugars and 1g is dietary fiber. It also has 1g of protein.

Red bananas are eaten in the same way as yellow bananas, by peeling the fruit before eating. Frequently eaten raw, whole or chopped, and added to desserts and fruit salads, they can also be baked, fried and toasted. Red bananas are also commonly sold dried in stores.
