    Chinese Cabbage

The Chinese Cabbage scientifically known as Brassica rapa, consists of two main varieties called Pekenensis and Chinensis. It has hard, broad yet tender leaves with heavy mid ribs. When compared to a conventional cabbage, its leaves are fanned outwards rather than inwards. The Chinese Cabbage plants can grow up to 15 to 18 inches. It is also known as Napa Cabbage, Baguio Pechay or Pechay Wombok, Chinese White Cabbage, Wongbok and Hakusai.

When consumed raw Chinese Cabbage has a mild flavour and a crunchy texture to it. It is mostly consumed steamed, stir fried or raw as part of a salad. In Sri Lanka, Chinese Cabbage cultivation is limited to the up-country regions. This is due to its unique requirement of cold and humid weather, with rich soil and good water absorption capabilities.

Chinese cabbage contains a high volume of Vitamin A which is essential for good eye-health. This vegetable is high in Potassium and has anti-inflammatory properties. The low sodium and calory count in this variety of cabbage makes it a good, natural source of nutrition for people who have special dietary requirements.
