    What is Jak Fruit?

                The Jak Fruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is the largest tree-borne fruit, reaching as much as 36 kg in weight, 90 cm in length and 50 cm in diameter. Enormous and prickly on the outside, once cracked open, what you will find inside are pods or "bulbs". Often referred to as the seeds, these bulbs are actually a fleshy covering for the true seeds, which are round and dark.

                Mostly grown in the wet zones of Sri Lanka, Jak Fruit contains many vitamins and minerals, and offers numerous health benefits. The fruit's isoflavones, antioxidants, and phytonutrients contribute to its cancer-fighting properties. It is also known to help cure ulcers and indigestion.

                Jak Fruit is commonly used in South and Southeast Asian cuisine. It can be eaten cooked when unripe or uncooked when ripe. The unripe fruit is called ‘polos’ in Sri Lanka.  It is a spicy dish that replaces meat curries in Sri Lankan cuisine. Ripe jackfruit is naturally sweet with subtle flavouring. It can be used to make a variety of dishes, including custards, cakes, and halo-halo. Ripe Jak Fruit arils are sometimes seeded, fried or freeze-dried and sold as Jak Fruit chips.
