    What is Mangosteen?

In Southeast Asia, mangosteen is referred to as the consort to the “king of fruits” -the durian. The overpowering durian is a ‘warming yang’ whereas the mild mangosteen is a ‘cooling yin’.

Known botanically as Garcinia mangostana, the rind of the Mangosteen fruit is deep purple in colour turning into a shade of wine when ripe. The soft, white flesh within is divided into wedges. The pleasant juice released from the flesh is a perfect balance of acids and sugars. In Sri Lanka, mangosteen is primarily cultivated in dry areas of the country, Kalutara being the hub of it. U & H Lankafood Exports has been exporting these homegrown succulent mangosteens throughout the globe for years.

Mangosteen contains an impressive list of essential nutrients. It’s very low in calories, contains no saturated fats or cholesterol, and is rich in dietary fiber. A rich source of vitamin C and a moderate source of B-complex vitamins, thiamin, niacin and folates, it also contains a good amount of minerals, potassium, manganese and magnesium.

This exotic juicy fruit is usually enjoyed by itself. But mangosteen complements well with fruit sections such as papaya, watermelonpineapple and grapes. Mangosteen juice is a tasty thirst quenching drink that beats the summer heat.
