The Pomegranate or Punica granatum L. is an edible berry which is between a lemon and a grapefruit in size, 5–12 cm in diameter with a rounded hexagonal shape, and has thick reddish skin. The exact number of seeds in a pomegranate can vary from 200 to 1400.  Each seed has a surrounding water-laden pulp -the edible aril- ranging in color from white to deep red or purple. In Sri Lanka, Pomegranate is cultivated in home gardens especially as a medicinal plant and a fruit tree.

A good source of vitamins C and B, antioxidant polyphenols, pantothenic acid and potassium; Pomegranate juice increases blood flow to the heart, and is extremely beneficial for people with ischemic heart disease. The juice of the Pomegranate fruit is also used for treating dyspepsia and leprosy.

Fresh fruits of Pomegranate are generally eaten raw, freshly plucked from the tree. In some countries, the juice is a very popular beverage. The extracted juice may be concentrated and frozen for future use. It may also be made into thick syrup for use as a sauce and is also often converted into wine.
