    Radish is the edible root of the Raphanus sativus plant, a member of the botanical family of Brissicaceae. A radish seed can sprout into a plant in as little as three days which has given rise to the name of its genus Raphanus, which means “to appear quickly” in Greek. 

    Radish has a long history and was a well established crop in the ancient civilizations of Rome and Greece which leads researchers to believe that it was first cultivated much earlier than that. They make a popular companion crop and are commonly grown with beets, carrots and parsnips. Radishes are cultivated in the wet zones of Sri Lanka and are available all year round.

    Commonly found in white or pink colors the radish root is usually eaten raw, but can be steamed or stewed.  The raw radish carries a crisp taste, and a pungent peppery flavor. The leaves of the plant are also edible and can be eaten steamed.

    Radishes are a rich source of Vitamin C, Potassium and Folate. A 100g serving contains only 16 calories making it a popular choice for anyone who wants to maintain a trim waistline.
