    Bell peppers- Red

    Related to spicy chili peppers, red bell peppers are known as "sweet peppers". These are not spicy due to the lack of capsaicin, the chemical which causes the pungent taste in chili peppers. A member of the  Capsicum annuum species, red bell peppers feature a deep red color, and an almost fruity taste, and are the sweetest out of the green, red, yellow, and orange varieties. They are grown in numerous countries throughout the world, including Sri Lanka, and are used in a variety of different cuisines.

    One large red bell pepper contains three times the vitamin C of an average orange. They are also rich in vitamin A, vitamin B6, folate, fiber, vitamin E while low in calories. Recent studies show the intake of bell peppers aid in cancer prevention and reduce the risk for gastric and esophageal cancer.

    Red bell peppers can be cut into strips and stir-fried or stewed with meat or sauces to bring a tasteful flavor. They can also be used in many vegetarian dishes. Other recipes feature red bell peppers skewered and grilled or stuffed with meat, cheese, herbs, and spices. Paprika is a dried powdered form of bell pepper that can be used in an assortment of different dishes.
