    What is Sapodilla?

Known as ‘rata-mi’ in Sri Lanka, Sapodilla or Manilkara zapota is a large ellipsoid berry, 4–8 cm in diameter and contains two to five seeds. Inside, its flesh ranges from a pale yellow to an earthy brown color with a grainy texture. The fruit has a high latex content and does not ripen until picked, whereupon the fruit softens to a firmness and appearance very similar to that of a fuzzy, brown-skinned kiwifruit.

Sapodilla is a delicious tropical fruit rich in vitamins, minerals and health benefiting anti-oxidant tannins. It is soft, composed of easily digestible pulp made up of simple sugars like fructose and sucrose, that when eaten replenish energy and revitalize the body instantly. The fruit has an exceptionally sweet, malty flavor, which tastes like caramel or a pear candied with brown sugar.

Fresh sapodilla is eaten when it turns soft. The fruit is cut into two equal halves and the flesh is scooped out using a spoon, discarding the seeds. Fresh sapodilla fruit sections are a great addition to fruit salads and sapodilla-milk shake is a favorite drink in Asia. It is also commonly used in ice creams, cakes and pies.

U & H Lankafood Exports’s effective networking and modernized strategies guarantee that your order of sapodilla will reach you efficiently in the highest quality deliverable.
