    Turnip is the edible tap root of the Bressica rapa plant. Turnips were a well established crop in the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations which implies that its cultivation may have begun much earlier than that.

    The commonest type of turnip has a white surface with a pinkish end which is the sun exposed part of the tap root. They can vary from spherical to conical in shape, and the flesh inside is entirely white in color. Turnip leaves are also edible and are commonly known as “turnip greens”.
