    Wood apple

                 Dubbed elephant-apple, monkey fruit, and curd fruit, wood-apple is a native fruit to Sri Lanka and is grown prominently in its dry zones. Known botanically as Limonia acidissima, the Wood apple fruit is a berry of 5–9 cm in diameter which may taste either sweet or sour. It has a very hard rind which can be difficult to crack open, and contains sticky yet edible brown pulp and small white seeds.

                A hundred grams of wood apple pulp contains 31 grams of carbohydrate and two grams of protein, which add up to nearly 140 calories. The ripe fruit is rich in beta-carotene, a precursor of Vitamin A. It also contains significant quantities of the B vitamins, thiamine and riboflavin, and small amounts of Vitamin C. 

                The fruit is eaten plain, blended into an assortment of drinks and sweets, or well-preserved as jam. The scooped-out wood apple pulp is eaten uncooked with or without sugar, or is combined with coconut milk and palm-sugar syrup and made into a nutritious drink, or frozen as an ice cream. It is also used in chutneys, fruit preserves, jelly and jam.
